Why is Onboarding still so overlooked?
You’ve gone through the rigorous interview process, tailored questions, and finally found the right candidate.
You offer them the job, they accept … exciting!
But research shows that 30% of new employees leave within the first 90 days due to onboarding issues.
The cost of this revolving door can be detrimental – in time, energy, and reputation.
Here are a few simple tips to enhance your onboarding process:
✔️ Make contact with the candidate after they’ve accepted, even if you went through an agency (we will of course keep in contact with our candidates throughout the process but nothing beats the new employer doing this)
✔️ Call them a few days before they start to get them excited and confirm first day details
✔️ Email them copies of all the documents to complete / read ahead of starting
✔️ Send them their induction plan for their first week so they can see what’s ahead (we do this here at StormX, we have a 2 week induction plan so everyone knows what the plan is which has worked really well for us)
✔️ Ensure IT set up prior to them starting (nothing worse than turning up on your first day and spending the first day sitting waiting for your equipment!)
✔️ Introduce them to the team, the company if you can before they start (we always do this as part of the process here at StormX), its worked well for us to fully integrate the new team member into the team
Put yourself in their shoes; a warm welcome sets the tone for success. Remember, first impressions matter!
